Jefferson Quotation Bleg

On the Senate floor yesterday, Chris Dodd said: "Jefferson , of course, said it better than anyone many years ago when he said if he had to choose between a free country and a free press, he would select the latter. " I've seen many variations of this quotation but none with a citation to an original source. Does anybody know whether the quotation is real or bogus (like the infamous fake Tocqueville line "America is great because America is good")? If real, could you please point to a reference?
