The Double Rove? The Triple Rove??

From the conservative blog Powerline:

They Were Already Beneath Contempt...

...but now some Democrats have sunk lower. They are hinting that John Roberts is a homosexual because he was once photographed--more than thirty years ago--wearing plaid pants. You think I'm making this up? Charmaine Yoest has the story. If you think that's contemptible, consider this: some on the Left have also suggested that Roberts' four year old son is "gay."

Throughout American history, until now, there have been limits. There have been depths beneath which Americans would not sink for the sake of partisan advantage. Even during the Civil War, when the Democrats were fighting to preserve slavery, limits were observed. Now, all civility is gone. There is no depth to which some Democrats will not sink. Hold your nose. Things are only going to get worse. With MoveOn and the Daily Dose dominating Democratic politics, all constraints are gone.

The conservative backlash against the Dems begins. Plus, no uncomfortable questions about Roberts's views on abortion. The classic double Rove.

But is it? Could this just be part of a fiendishly clever Democratic strategy to use outraged to conservatives help spread their initial smear. Sure they're ticked, but they help spread the meme better than liberal blogs where the suggestion first started. If so, that means we may in fact be witnessing a Triple Rove! I don't think the Democrats have ever tried this in competition before.

I noticed you didn't address anything Powerline addressed. You merely called it "conservative backlash" and then ignored it. A pity.

Okay, let's directly address the substance of what Powerline says. What they say is that where once there were limits in political cruelty, there are no longer any, and this is the fault entirely of shameless Democrats.

So, if politics has hit a new low, that means that we've surpassed the use of government resources to invade opposition party headquarters in Watergate, we've surpassed the use of the Alien and Sedition Acts to jail unfriendly newspaper editors during the Adams administration, we've surpassed the McCarthy Era, the suppression of the black vote through lynching and intimidation after Reconstruction, the ultimately fatal Hamilton-Burr rivalry. Indeed, Powerline gives us a direct bar against which to measure today's political depths: even in the Civil War, we weren't this bad, not when pro- and anti-slavery forces carried out proxy wars in Kansas, not when a South Carolina represenative beat a Massachusetts Senator nearly to death with a cane on the Senate floor, not when we had an honest-to-goodness Civil War in which thousands were killed.

No, Powerline says, that's all but a pittance: the Democrats have finally crossed the line, because somebody may have said something dumb about John Roberts' son on a website. So, have we addressed their point?

Has it ever occurred to the guy at Powerline that Democrats have (gasp) a sense of humor and like to joke around about which prominent Republicans are gay?
