Experience and the Senate

Andrew Sullivan posts this question:

Is there a single member of the U.S. Senate besides Hillary Clinton for whom it was the FIRST elected office?

He adds:

Maybe Liddy Dole, another marital nepotist?

Besides Clinton and Dole, there are a few other for whom the U.S. Senate was their first elected office.

Ted Kennedy
Chuck Hagel
Orrin Hatch
Bob Bennett
Jim Webb
John Warner
Herb Kohl

Kennedy, of course got his seat through nepotism. Hagel, Bennett, and Kohl were successful businessmen. Bennett is the son of former Senator, so perhaps a bit of nepotism there. Webb and Warner both served as Secretary of the Navy. Hatch was a lawyer in private practice.
