While many conservatives regard the Civil War president as the spiritual founder of the Republican Party, others deeply resent him as a man who ruthlessly suspended constitutional rights and freedoms in order to militarily challenge the South's belief in its right to secede.

I think I first made the Lincoln-Giuliani association somewhere between Abner Louima and Amadou Diallo.
Whenever the association was made, I don't think there is any doubt that, had Lincoln survived Ford's theater, the Reconstruction of the South would have included a Disney store.
Historians increasingly agree that Lincoln overreacted to the actions of well-intentioned 2nd Amendment types at Fort Sumter.

Agreed. Similarly, FDR went way over the top when the Japanese tried to help the U.S. Navy dispose of its fleet of aging battleships at Pearl Harbor.
