One rather surprising result last week was Jim Leach's loss in the IA-2. Leach really was one of the last GOP moderates (55 ADA score in 2004) and the way he lost only enhances his reputation. When the NRCC tried to send out a mailing attacking Leach's opponent on same-sex marriage, Leach demanded that it not be sent and that if it was and he won, he would caucus with the Democrats in the next Congress. The mailing was never sent.
One interesting piece of Leach trivia--he got his start in politics as a staff assistant to U.S. Representative Donald Rumsfeld.
