Tony Snow and the Battle of the Bulge

White House spokesperson Tony Snow had this to say about public disapproval of the Iraq war:

"If somebody had taken a poll in the Battle of the Bulge, I dare say people would have said, 'Wow, my goodness, what are we doing here?' But you cannot conduct a war based on polls."

According to the Roper Center, FDR's approval rating in December 1944, the month of the Battle of the Bulge, was 72 percent. Right now, Bush stands somewhere between 35 and 40 percent.
