Horowitz on Hate Crimes

Over at Frontpage Magazine, David Horowitz has a post on the incidence of anti-Jewish hate crimes versus those against Muslims.

Five times more Anti-Jew hate crimes than anti-Muslim.

The FBI has released its latest hate crimes report. Jews are five times as likely as Muslims to be the targets of hate crimes.

The headline is correct since there are 5 times more anti-Jewish crimes than anti-Islamic crimes (1077 versus 202), but the statement that Jews are fives times more likely to be the targets is inaccurate since there are more Jews than Muslims in the U.S. When the you look at hate crimes per 100,000 population, there are 27 hate crimes per 100,000 Jews and 13 per 100,000 Muslims. That means Jews are twice as likely as Muslims to be victims, not five times. Cold comfort, but it's nice to be accurate.

Speaking of Horowitz and hate crimes, for some some reason he didn't mention that the same FBI data show that blacks are 4.5 times more likely than whites to be victims of hate crimes.

Update: Horowitz has since corrected his blog and removed the inaccurate statement.
