Roberts

Quick thoughts on Roberts:

1. He looked like the happiest man in the world.

2. He's very conservative. I was struck by his comment about the Court's role in our "constitutional democracy." I'll take that as shorthand for "I don't like Court-created rights that strip power from elected majorities." Does that mean he'd strike down Roe? Who knows, but I'd guess so.

3. He's probably confirmable, absent some sort of personal dirt. He is widely acknowledged as smart and decent. Plus, he's got lots of DC connections. Finally, there's no paper trail of outré opinions and statements like Robert Bork. All that people seem to have on him is a willingness to restrict the application of the Endangered Species Act.
