If you think this has nothing to do with politics, I remember reading somewhere that when Congressman Vito Marcantonio ran for mayor of NYC in 1949, Winchell campaigned for him. Marcantonio was probably the most left-wing person to sit in Congress. As I recall, Winchell would pretend to be a corporate fat cat with his ventriloquist dummy as incumbent mayor, William O'Dwyer.
