About, in other words, the deals Karzai has had to strike with the warlords to protect the poppy fields and the dope trade, with the Taliban to insure some election security in Kabul and Kandarhar, with every mullah (except the One Who Counts) in the country to keep women in their place and confine modern ways to Kabul. What we are about to see in Afghanistan is more like elections in Lebanon during the early stages of its civil war than what we could have had with - again - adequate planning for the occupation.<br /><br />Now, it's true that most Americans don't know much about this and, no doubt, the Bushistas will push it a bit. The last thing they want, however, is front page stories about what is really going on in Afghanistan. There won't be more than a two day splash on this one, I bet.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
